Sanilac County farm raided, 33 animals dead, 45 rescued from starvation.

UPDATE, April 10, 2007

Visit our legislation page for contact information to support HB 4551 which will increase penalties for future Jackletts. Passing this legislation means Jacklett's victims did not die in vein.

1/3/07 - Responding to a tip, Sanilac County Sheriff Deputies found 33 dead animals at the East Marlette Road farm owned by Fred Jacklett Jr.   45 other animals we re transported to foster homes.  Volunteer foster homes are caring for goats, pigs, sheep, birds, reptiles and a horse that were severely malnourished.  Fred Jacklett Jr, a  21 year old man was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.  He was released on a very low, $10,000 bond.  The police have not located a 42 year old woman who also resided at the Marlette Road residence.

The alleged perpetrator will be arraigned after the investigation is completed by Sanilac County Sherriff and Animal Control Departments.  For more information:

UPDATE February 14, 2007

Times Herald Article:  http://thetimesherald.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070210/NEWS01/702100307/1002/NEWS17

2/14/07 - Sadly, the legal system failed to adequately punish the perpetrators who tormented and neglected over 70 animals. Without notice, Fred Jacklett, Jr. pleaded guilty to misdemeanor animal cruelty on February 1st.  He was sentenced at that same hearing.  Jacklett is banned from owning animals for 2 years, 30 days community service, $1300 in fines and to serve 93 days in the Sanilac County Jail.  It should be noted that 33 days of that sentence is suspended so he will only serve 60 days unless he violates probation.

Laurie McConnell who also resided at the farm also pleaded guilty.  Her sentence was even lighter, banned for 2 years from owning animals, 30 days in jail and 15 days of community service.

It is a tremendous miscarriage of justice that the sentencing hearings were held without notice. This is an obvious attempt to cover up an unjust result. There is a chance that these animals will be further injured by the system that failed them. The Times Herald reports that any animals not kept by their foster homes will be sold, we assume, since the victims are livestock, they will be auctioned.  Please help prevent this travesty by writing the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners, the Prosecutor and the editor of the Times Herald to let them know that auctioning any of these animals is unacceptable, that the appropriate placement would be at a farm sanctuary such as SASHA.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

To donate to help feed and provide vet care for the animals:  Sanilac County Animal Control, 35 S. Stoutenburg Road, Sandusky, MI 48471.

Visit our adopt a pet page and adopt a dog or cat from Sanilac/Tuscola County Animal Control Shelters.  The shelters are full.  They are housing 5 dogs from this cruelty case.  Since the shelters are so small, and it is expected that the 5 dogs will be in the shelter for weeks, maybe months, there isn't much room for incoming strays.  If you are looking for a pet please consider one from this shelter so there will be space for incoming strays.

Also, please contact the Sanilac County Prosecutor's office and demand that the perpetrator's be charged with 33 felony counts of animal cruelty and torture and 45 counts of felony neglect.  Each animal that suffered demands recognition in a separate criminal count, even though, sadly, under Michigan law, the longest possible sentence in this case is only 4 years in prison.   Contact information:

James V. Young, Prosecuting Attorney, Sanilac County Courthouse, 60 W. Sanilac, Sandusky Michigan, 48471.

Please check this site for updates.  We intend to follow the case to insure that this case is taken seriously by the legal system.

City of Wyandotte endangers people, pets and wildlife by setting steel jaw traps on public property

2/17/05    Dangerous to adults, kids, pets and wildlife you bet!  In one of the biggest bonehead moves, the City of Wyandotte set several steel jawed traps on its Golf Course to trap coyotes.  So far, we know of at least one dog that was trapped and badly injured.  To learn how to stop the City from this dangerous practice visit:  Stop the Steel Jawed Traps in Wyandotte

UPDATE (2/18/05)   A concerned citizen received an email from Mayor Leonard Sabuda it reads in part:

Thank you for your recent email concerning the use of steel jaw traps at the Wyandotte Shores Golf Course.  This situation was recently brought to my attention by the president of Jethro’s Place Animal Sanctuary.  After our discussion, I instructed our personnel to remove these devices from the golf course.  I agree this is not a humane way to deal with the coyotes seen on the golf course, however, if the problem continues, we will need to seek another solution.
