State of Michigan Moratorium on new factory farms in Michigan HB 4667 and SB 0444 will stop new factory farming operations from opening in Michigan. Factory farms are especially nasty places where thousands of animals live dreadful lives. Chickens, pigs, cows, turkeys suffer terribly in confinement for their entire lives. Factory farms also pose devastating environmental problems. The urine and feces produced by the animals leech into the water supply, foul the air and endanger human and animal lives. Find your Michigan State Senator Find your Michigan State Representative Stop Outrageous Voting Scheme In one of the most brazen attempts to circumvent voting laws, the hunting lobby has gotten it's minions to introduce legislation to make hunting, trapping and fishing license applications, automatic voter registration applications. As long as the applicant is 18 years old they will automatically be registered to vote. Aren't we sick of paid lobbyist's latest whims making their way onto the legislative calendar? Why not allow automatic registration of anyone who applies from a license from the state? Doctors, lawyers, hair stylists, veterinarians, morticians, food service workers, nurses? Why just hunters and trappers? Why can't hunters and trappers register to vote like everyone else? By angry Michigan citizens and let your legislators know that you will exercise your right to vote against them if they support this dangerous scheme. Also, contact the sponsors of this legislation and let them know that you are onto them and you will not let them get away with this disgusting act at the behest of lobbyists. Find your Michigan State Senator Find your Michigan State Representative Increase penalties for neglect and abuse of animals HB 4551, introduced by Representative Espinoza from Sanilac County, raises penalties for neglect and abuse of animals. Currently, prosecutors argue that state law prevents them from charging many animal abusers with felonies. The result is a slap on the wrist for even the most heinous crimes. One example is the Sanilac County case which involved over 70 animals. Thirty-three were found starved to death, over 40 were sick and starving. Incredibly, food was on the premises. Fred Jacklett, Jr. pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and was sentenced to serve 60 days in jail, perform 30 days of community service and received a $1300 fine. Laurie McConnell was sentenced to 15 days in jail and 15 days community service. Both were prohibited from owning animals for 2 years. To read more about this travesty of justice click here. HB 4551 would allow a court to sentence the next Jacklett to a 4 year felony. While not perfect, this legislation does attempt to deal with mass abuse cases.
